Steps to Obtain a CDL
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) you must:
-
Hold a commercial learner's permit (CLP) for 14 days before taking the CDL skills exam

Be at least 18 years old
-
Have a valid Indiana driver's license for at least one year
-
Have an acceptable driving record
-
Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen
-
Obtain a DOT Medical Certification "medical card"
-
Pass a written test to obtain your Commercial Learners Permit (CLP)
-
Attend a ELDT Theory Pass exam with an 80%
-
Perform Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Road & Range Training at a FMCSA registered Training Provider.

Perform a Skills Evaluation Test at a BMV third party test site
-
Go to BMV to Obtain your Newly acquired CDL
