Steps to Obtain a  CDL

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) you must: 

  • Hold a commercial learner's permit (CLP) for 14 days before taking the CDL skills exam

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Have a valid Indiana driver's license for at least one year

  • Have an acceptable driving record

  • Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen

  • Obtain a DOT Medical Certification "medical card"

  • Pass a written test to obtain your Commercial Learners Permit (CLP)

  • Attend a ELDT Theory Pass exam with an 80% 

  • Perform Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Road & Range Training at a FMCSA registered Training Provider.

  • Perform a Skills Evaluation Test at a BMV third party test site

  • Go to BMV to Obtain your Newly acquired CDL
